Pro surfing returns to Lakey Peak with Indonesia’s largest prize purse for the Dompu Indonesian Open presented by Quiksilver.

In line with their commitment to the growth and development of surfing in Indonesia, Quiksilver has confirmed support as presenting sponsor for the Dompu Indonesian Open presented by Quiksilver lifting the events rating to six star prime and positioning it as the richest Indonesian Surfing Championship (ISC) tour event ever. A fitting return to the famed Lakey Peak in east Sumbawa!
With it’s proximity to Bali and well developed tourist infrastructure, Sumbawa has become a prime surf destination in Indonesia attracting hundreds of surfers each week to sample the legendary waves of Lakey Peak and Lakey Pipe.
Understanding the potential of this valuable natural resource the Dompu Regency Government has brought back professional surfing as a vehicle to promote the area to a wider audience.
“We feel that the sport of surfing has the potential to open up more windows for the region of Dompu” Said Mr. Abdul Harris, head of the Dompu Tourism Board. “This event will no doubt generate both excitement and awareness into the area promoting what a recreational and pleasurable destination this is. To also have the support of Quiksilver with the Dompu Indonesian Open creates huge potential through the awareness it will bring to our market place.”
With double ratings points on offer and the IDR 60,000,000 prize purse, makes this highly anticipated event the richest ever in ISC (Indonesian Surfing Championship) Tour history. The 6 Star Prime event will also be the only leg of the tour surfed outside of Bali for the 2007 competitive season.
“Quiksilver has a history of supporting events throughout Indonesia and we are happy to be aligning with the Dompu Regency to help highlight the amazing waves that they have on offer. With our vast experience in holding world class surf events and Quiksilver’s resources in online, global and local PR we aim to bring greater exposure to this event and the region. We are also rapt to be able to provide the surfers another quality event for this year’s Indonesian Open Series” said Quiksilver Indonesia CEO Greg Hinchliffe.
The last major professional surf competition held at Lakey Peak was held 10 years ago and while attended by a strong field of international and local surfers, the event was won by Indonesian Surf star Rizal Tanjung, who will return to defend his title.
“I always love going to Lakey Peak” said Rizal after he was asked about the event, “it’s such a heavy wave when it’s over 6 feet; much heavier than Padang Padang, and when it’s small its one of the most rippable waves in Indonesia. I’m really excited that the government has taken notice of surfing here in our country and become more involved in the sport. It should be a great event.”
The Dompu Indonesia Open presented by Quiksilver will run from the 13th to 15th of August at Lakey Peak in the Dompu Regency, on the island of Sumbawa.
The event is proudly supported by the Dompu Regency Department of Art and Culture, Quiksilver, ISC, Surftime magazine, and Magic Wave magazine.

Bali's Pepen Hendrik takes the win at the Dompu Indonesian Open presented by Quiksilver at Lakey Peak in Sumbawa

16 August, Dompu Sumbawa, Indonesia: Pepen Hendrik has won the richest ever ISC tour event, the Dompu Indonesian Open presented by Quiksilver in testing six foot conditions at Lakey Peak in Sumbawa.

Pepen came out of the blocks with all guns firing in the 30 minute final against fellow Indonesian compatriot and defending event champion Rizal Tanjung.

With Pepen charging every wave that came his way, Rizal was quickly put into a position requiring a combination of scores to win, but the ever experienced Rizal patiently waited for the right waves to come his way and fought back into contention. With five minutes remaining, Rizal only required a solid scoring wave to take the win.

As the clocked ticked over the final minute mark, a large set approached the Peak, with Pepen opting to take the first wave of the set. This left Rizal sitting in perfect position for the approaching and better second wave. Rizal needing a high score to win took off and bottom turned and then stalled up into the barrel. The barreling wave however shut down, not allowing an exit for Rizal and with it victory to Pepen who won the final with a total score of 17.00 points to Rizal's 16.60.

For Pepen, the 2004 ISC Champion (the inaugural year for the ISC), this was clearly a much welcomed win. "It's been several years since I've been in a final with Rizal, so I was really happy to meet him and win" Said Pepen.

By winning Pepen pockets the richest prize purse in ISC tour history of Rp20,000,000 and a much needed extra point's boost due to the events 6 Star prime rating, the only one of the 2007 season. "Today I was lucky to get some good waves and Rizal wasn't so lucky, but I'm so happy to have a first place win, and to have it here at Lakey Peak is just great!" said Pepen.

Also surfing today was the master's final which saw the over 35 take to the peak in extremely windy and testing 6 foot conditions. The final saw the Indonesian surfing legends, Gede Narmada, Wayan Gantiyasa, Wayan Pica, and Ketut Menda take on the challenging conditions with all the essence of youth, with Wayan Gantiyasa coming out the victor.

At the awards presentation and closing ceremony, the Regent of Dompu, Mr. Syaifurrahman Salman, voiced his appreciation to Quiksilver, the ISC, and Mr. Harris of the Dompu Department of Tourism for bringing back competitive surfing to the region and highlighting the exceptional natural resource Dompu has to offer the surfing world. The Regent promised ongoing government support of the event and development of surfing in the local region, which brought great applause and cheer by all present.

The Dompu Indonesian Open presented by Quiksilver was sponsored by the Dompu Tourism Department and Quiksilver, with the support of the Aman Gati Hotel and the local regency of Dompu in West Sumbawa, Indonesia.
